Spelling

Each week, students will be given 15 words with focus features.  There is generally one new feature each week for students to compare to previously learned features.  Each Friday, students will be assessed on 10 of the words with an emphasis on the words with the new feature.  During the week, I will also help the whole class study 2-3 of the second grade "must spell" words.  We practice these words daily.  

Scoring Breakdown:

- The ten spelling words are worth one point each.  If students misspell the focus feature of their word, they will not earn a point for that word.  However, if they misspell a different portion of their word, I will only subtract half of a point since that is not the aspect of the word that we focused heavily on.  Students can earn a total of ten points for these spelling words.

- There are two handprints on the bottom of their test paper.  This area is reserved for dictation sentences.  These sentences will include the "must spell" words that we have been studying.  I will be looking for a variety of things as they write these sentences, including: correct punctuation, proper capitalization, correct "must spell" spellings,  and appropriate spacing of words.  Students can earn a total of five points for each of these sentences.

- I will place the total points your child earned on their spelling test in the upper right hand corner of their test.
